Hanbit unit becomes a ray of sunshine to a child who suffers from illness

A South Sudanese child who has been suffering from a malignant lymphoma on her face will receive surgery and treatment from a Korean medical team with help of the Hanbit unit, a part of UNMISS, United Nations Mission in South Sudan on PKO duty and a child care institution.

The child who is receiving the help is Niyaring Ailer Maniel, 5, who lives in Rudier village, Bor city, Jonglei.

She was found by the medical team of Hanbit unit when they visited Rudier village on July 18 to offer medical support to the public. Since there was a tumor growing on the left side of her face, she had already lost her left eye and could not feed herself properly.

Her parents got divorced when she was just a baby, so she was raised by her grandmother. She was a healthy girl until last May when she got a sudden edema and her health degenerated quickly. She had not been given even basic treatment due to her tough family circumstances and poor level of medical treatment.

As soon as the unit heard the story, they agreed to get her treatment in Korea and sought a supporting organization. Then, ChildFund Korea and the Korean medical team volunteered to take charge of her support and surgery.

“I’m so grateful to give my granddaughter new hope with care from the Hanbit unit and ChildFund Korea,” said Niyaring’s grandmother, Akuk, 52.

Completing administrative procedures such as registering Niyaring’s birth and issuing her visa, the unit and ChildFund took her to Mulago National Hospital in Kampala, Uganda, where the medical standard is a little better, on August 4. She will stay there until mid-August undergoing basic medical treatment so her condition does not worsen, then be transferred to Korea to get the swelling removal and receive facial reconstruction surgery and treatment.
