“My teacher is just like my big brother. I guess that’s why I can study more easily!”

Goblin Unit, the 9th Division, has been providing study support every Wednesday and Saturday for the last three years, since April 2011, when it entered into an agreement with the Seonhan neighborhood center, located at Geumchon-dong, Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do.

Starting with six soldier-teachers, 15 teachers have passed through so far and around 30 students entered universities with their support. It became a good example of a military study support program with its successful operation.

The courses consist of two times of one-to-one study, and each class lasts for one and a half hours. They give not only lectures on major subjects, such as math, English, etc., but also advice on entering school and careers, and are more than just teachers, but mentors forming meaningful relationships with those beneficiary students.

“There were many students who were struggling with studying as well as human relationships, but with the soldier-teachers’ constant concern and efforts, their study and human relationships got remarkably better. I really appreciate that,” said Jung Byung-Han, the head of the center.
