“We won’t forget the great sacrifices Colombia made for us”

17th Division paid their respects to the noble souls of the many fallen who fought in a foreign land to protect Korea’s freedom 60 years ago.

The division, on August 5, spared no effort to support the ’Memorial ceremony for Colombian war veterans’ held in front of the Colombian Veterans Monument in Gajeong-dong, Seo-gu, Incheon. Around 200 people, including Colombian Ambassador Tito Saul Panilla, 17th division commander and soldiers, head of Incheon Regional Office of Patriots & Veterans Affairs, and Korean War veterans, attended the ceremony organized by the Colombian Embassy in Korea.

The ceremony began with a pledge of allegiance to the nation, a floral tribute and incense burning, a silent tribute, an artillery salute for the dead and a commemoration speech.

During the speech, the 17th division commander said, “Colombian veterans who showed their courage and made sacrifices for a foreign country that many of them hardly knew about are responsible for the Korea that exists today. We will never forget their noble spirit."

In fact, Colombia is the only Latin American country who fought to bring freedom to Korea, heading missions with 3 frigates starting in November, 1951, at the height of the Korean War. 5,314 Colombian soldiers, including 1 battalion, were involved in glorious exploits at the battles of Geumseong, Hill Kimhwa 400, and Old Baldy, and 200 of them were killed in action.
