Korea-U.S.-Japan establish information sharing agreement as of December 29

The Ministry of National Defense (MND) said that an information sharing agreement on North Korean nuclear and missile threats has been made and came into effect as of December 29.

At a regular briefing, Defense Spokesman Kim Min-Seok said, “This agreement contains the methods and procedures to share classified information through the U.S. based on provisions related to the information sharing with a third party specified in the existing bilateral agreements between Korea and the U.S. and between the U.S. and Japan. This signed agreement has been effective as of 12 a.m. KST today. It was signed in order and the three countries agreed that it would take effect on December 29, at 12 a.m.”

According to the MND, the information to be shared through this agreement is limited to the nuclear and missile threats of North Korea. The three countries are also going to share information in other areas with mutual consent only. Through this agreement, the MND is expecting strategic effects to restrain North Korea’s will to provoke us in advance as well as to respond the provocation more quickly and accurately based on close cooperation among the three countries.

Settlement of detailed practices and procedures of the agreement is planned after consultation among information authorities of the three countries.
