“Hanbit unit is acclaimed as ‘God‘s blessing’ to all the citizens of Bor.”

The Ministry of National Defense said, on September 1 that the Mayor of Bor Municipal Council in Jonglei State, South Sudan, Nhial Majak Nhial, sent a handwritten letter to President Park Geun-hye to convey his gratitude for the peace and stability Hanbit unit has brought to his country. His seven-page handwritten letter was delivered to President Park on August 29.

The mayor wrote that the dispatch of Hanbit unit to South Sudan, where the country suffers from the lack of infrastructure and public services, became a hope just like a welcome rain. He also said that it was a remarkable achievement that only the Hanbit unit of Korea could provide such as road construction in Bor city, great firefighting at Bor market and emergency aid during flooding of the White Nile, and thanks to them, all the citizens of Bor could recover stability.

Recalling the circumstances of Bor city occupied by rebels, Mayor Nhial said, “While all the other humanitarian organizations took shelter, only the Hanbit unit stayed with us. They treated innocent civilians who fell victim to the dangerous situation and spared no efforts and protection to help refugees, reaching 20,000 in the refugee center, maintain their lives.”

He especially gave high regard for the completion of the bank of the White Nile, which the local residents had long hoped, saying that the unit created conditions in which Bor city could make stable development by solving problems of flooding and inconvenience that made local residents move other places to evacuate. He also added that hard work and goal setting, which are proper to Koreans working days and nights based on a devotional spirit of service, became a great inspiration to all the Bor citizens.

At the end of the letter, the Mayor Nhial expressed his great appreciation to President Park Geun-hye, Defense Minister Han Min-koo and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Choi Yun-hee, saying that he hopes Bor city can act as an advanced city in South Sudan and have a closer mutual cooperative relationship with Korea.

Hanbit unit has currently completed the bank work of the White Nile, and at a completion ceremony, Mayor Nhial presented a certificate of honorary citizenship to Colonel Park Won-dae with a letter of appreciation.
