The first meeting of the committee for the improvement of Korea-U.S. Navy combined antisubmarine warfare(ASW) ability was held at Busan base on April 27.

The Naval Operations Command(NOC) held a meeting of the 2015 ROK-U.S. ASW Cooperation Committee with the U.S. 7th Fleet, and it was attended by approximately 70 major commanding officers and chiefs of staff including the Korean and American commanders, Vice Admiral Eom Hyun-sung and Robert L. Thomas.

As the NOC and the U.S. 7th Fleet signed a joint declaration regarding committee operation in August of last year, the Korea-U.S. ASW Cooperation Committee has been officially established. It has been making efforts for building up combined antisubmarine warfare ability, enhancement of interoperability, education and training, evaluation, antisubmarine warfare environment analysis, an information sharing system, etc.

They announced component operations exchange of both subordinate forces and its results at this first committee gathering, including multispectrum warfare, antisubmarine warfare, marine patrol, submarine warfare, etc.

They not only shared the vision of antisubmarine cooperation, but also made an announcement of further plans and final state in various areas such as antisubmarine warfare education and training, tactical and operational doctrine, tactics analysis and evaluation, weapons and detection equipment, etc.

The 8th Combat Training Center, which evaluates our Navy’s antisubmarine warfare capability and Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command (NMAWC), carrying out a similar mission, has established a “training and evaluation committee” and established promotion plans for the combined antisubmarine evaluation ability.

And the Marine Intelligence Group, which collects information about the oceanic environment as well, sought development of the relationship with the relevant U.S. Naval units and made a blueprint for understanding and sharing the oceanic environment surrounding the Korean Peninsula.

Both units agreed upon supplemental and development areas based on regular exchange and cooperation, and by resolving it together, they successfully formed a consensus to boost the alliance.

“The Korea-U.S. ASW Cooperation Committee will play the role of an engine improving our antisubmarine warfare capability. And by using it as a stepping stone, we intend to have a posture that can cope with any kind of enemy submarine-related threats,” said Commander Eom.
