Korea and India have agreed to activate military intelligence and promote defense cooperation between their military intelligence agencies.

Minister of National Defense Han Min-koo held the Korea-India Defense Ministers’ Meeting with India’s Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar on April 17, and discussed the issues above.

Defense Ministers Han and Parrikar exchanged opinions about regional security circumstances including the Korean Peninsula and sought for plans to promote defense cooperation such as high-level personnel interchange, activation of a regular consultative group, etc. Minister Han especially asked for attendance of India’s deputy minister of national defense at the fourth Seoul Defense Dialogue(SDD) to be held this autumn, and gave an idea of working-level cooperation to address super-national cyber threats.

They also agreed not to only establish the foundation of PKO cooperation in the region but also make a contribution to world peace through the joint effort of both countries.

Minister Parrikar visited Korea on April 15 and saw for himself our strength in the defense industry. He also met the head of the national security office, Kim Kwan-jin, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, Choi Yun-hee, and the minister of defense acquisition program administration, Chang Myoung-jin, having a broad exchange of opinions about security and defense industry cooperation between the two countries.

Korea and India set up a “strategic partnership” in 2010 after diplomatic ties were established in 1973, and faced a new era by concluding a “comprehensive economic partnership.”

“With President Park Geun-hye’s visit to India in January 2014, the strategic partnership between both countries has been evaluated to be developed to practical cooperation. This defense ministers’ meeting would be a chance to strengthen the cooperative relationship in the defense field,” said a MND official.
