“Time to join forces, honoring the sacrifices of patriotic martyrs”

Emphasis is put on the security without boundaries among parties, regions, and generations

“North Korea's nuclear missile development will lead to isolation and self-destruction.”

There is a strong will to punish North Korea for any provocations

Memorial Day

President Park Geun-hye appealed for national unity and integration.

President Park made a speech at the 61st Memorial Day Commemoration Ceremony which was held at National Cemetery in Seoul on June 6 and said, “When it comes to national security, there should be no boundaries among opposing parties, regions, and generations. Everyone should join forces so that we can end the history of division and open the path towards peace and reunification along the Korean Peninsula.”

She also emphasized, “Think of how many of our forebears sacrificed their lives to reunify the country. It is utterly deplorable that the level of national division is becoming so severe. Recently, North Korea flatly refused a request from the international community to denuclearize, and it has since held its 5th nuclear test, insisting on becoming a nuclear power in the 7th party convention. It is time to protect our country with patriotism and unity.”

President Park continued, “North Korea's nuclear threats represent a crucial provocation, which not only threatens our and Northeast Asia's security, but also impacts world peace. However, these threats are the biggest obstacles that block national reconciliation and reunification. The government will continue to apply sanctions and pressure, while closely cooperating with the international community, until North Korea ultimately chooses to denuclearize and hold effective talks.”

She expressed again her strong will to punish North Korea for any additional provocations. She said, “Korea and the U.S. are going to keep our defenses ready to strengthen our ability to deter the North Korean threat. If North Korea provokes us, we will decisively punish them to protect our lives and safety. North Korea should realize that the more they develop their nuclear and missile plans, the stronger the sanctions and pressures they will face from the international society, eventually leading to a path of isolation and self-destruction.”

Introducing the family of First Lieutenant Lee Jang-won, a marine who has been hailed as a hero of the 6·25 War, President Park said, “I believe that these great men’s noble spirit and their devotion to our country, and to the people, represent a great spiritual heritage that we should deeply engrave in our minds and inherit. The government is trying to strengthen the veterans' policy for men of national merit to honor patriotic martyrs’ precious spirits and treat them with due respect.”

Lastly, President Park resolved, “The government and I - with your great support - will protect and further develop the freedom and prosperity that our patriotic martyrs gifted us through their noble sacrifices.” And she emphasized “Once again, I’d like to show appreciation for all of you, men of national merit and all bereaved families, praying for all the martyrs and all the souls of our fallen heroes.”
