The 20th Cheonghae unit and Army-Navy counterterrorism special forces participated in combined maritime security and counterterrorism training exercises conducted in Brunei and Singapore, showing the outstanding mission capability of our army to the world. The Korean army took operational control of the naval combined forces and also won the 14-country shooting tournament.

Military and naval forces and/or staff groups from 18 nations participated in this training organized by ADMM-Plus, which started on May 1.

Through the training exercises, our military enhanced its counterterrorism operational capability to secure a sea lane around the South China Sea and strengthened its cooperative system for the UN’s anti-terrorism operations.

Significantly, Colonel Ahn Sang-min, the captain of the destroyer “Choi Young” led the entire training as training commander of the Australia-Brunei naval combined forces. Based on the premise that a merchant ship departing from Brunei harbor and heading to Singapore was hijacked, the combined forces conducted missions that included rescuing captive sailors and missing sailors through maritime search and rescue activities. At the same time, land-based counterterrorism activities involving the rescue of hostages who were held captive at the pirates’ inland base were also carried out.
