Joint Chiefs of Staff control and assess 2023 Daegu-Gyeongbuk Hwarang Exercise to establish integrated defense posture

“Local governments aim to establish an integrated defense posture for unified and strong security”

The 2023 Hwarang Exercise, led by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will take place in six zones (Daegu-Gyeongbuk, Daejeon/Chungnam/Sejong, Incheon/Gyeonggi, Gyeongnam, Seoul, Gwangju/Jeonnam) until October. The exercise started in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk zone from April 10 to 14.

Every two years, the Hwarang Exercise takes place in 17 metropolitan and special cities and provinces, which are divided into 11 zones to ensure the protection of people's lives and safety from North Korea's security threats during both wartime and peacetime.

The aim of the Hwarang Exercise aligns with the issues emphasized in the 56th Central Integrated Defense Meeting held in February, including FTX (Field Training Exercise) consisting of evacuation drills and civil air defense alerts to prepare for North Korea's nuclear and missile threats involving local residents, conducting a counter-terrorism FTX with unknown actors, and readiness for cyberterrorism.
