Korea-US-Japan discuss cooperative plans to counter North Korean missile threat

Korea, the US, and Japan held an Assistant Minister-level teleconference to share information related to the North Korean medium-range ballistic missile (IRBM), Musudan, and to discuss a cooperative plan to address it on June 24.

Chief of the Office of Planning and Coordination at the Defense Ministry Ryu Je-seung, US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs Kelly E. Magsamen, and the Japanese Director General for Defense Policy Satoshi Maeda attended as official delegates.

The three delegates agreed that the firing of Musudan is an obvious violation of the UN Security Council’s resolution, which prohibits any kind of launch with the use of ballistic missile technology.

They strongly condemned North Korea’s reckless provocations at this time when the international society’s sanctions are implementing towards their nuclear and missile provocations, and determined that this provocation could only strengthen the international community's determination to curb these missile attacks.

Ms Magsamen reconfirmed the air-tight defense commitment of the US to Korea, their strong ally, and the three delegates promised to continue to share information and provide policy assistance to counter North Korea's nuclear and missile threats.
