‘Light of hope in South Sudan’ - UN medals on the chest

‘Medal Parade’ event

The 6th Hanbit unit, which has been trying to help lift up South Sudan as a member of the United Nation's (UN's) peacekeeping forces, received credit for its outstanding mission capabilities. On September 20, the unit said that they held a ‘Medal Parade’ event, in which they pinned UN medals on peacekeepers' chests. This represents the highest honor for peacekeeping forces, as they have devoted themselves to the reconstruction of South Sudan.

The event was attended by around 400 people, including commanders and soldiers of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and its adjacent forces. The presence of the Korean ambassador to Uganda, Park Jong-dae, was especially symbolic.

Since their deployment last March, the 6th Hanbit unit has significantly improved its protective capabilities against enemy forces by dramatically enhancing boundary facilities such as reinforcing the protective wall, constructing a driveway for the rapid reaction team, cleaning the outside base for the field of fire, and so on. Of importance, the unit started building its roads from Bor to Pibor, which has never been attempted by either the South Sudan government or the UN's dispatched units following the independence of South Sudan. So far, 24 km of a total of 195 km have been completed for this project.
