Korean and U.S. defense ministers meet in Seoul on February 2.

A Korea-U.S. defense ministers conference will be held in Seoul on February 2.

At a regular briefing on January 26, spokesman for Ministry of National Defense Korea (MND) Moon Sang-kyun said that Korean Defense Minister Han Min-koo will be having talks with new U.S. Defense Minister James Mattis, who will visit Korea from February 2 to 3. This conference will be the first Korea-U.S. ministerial meeting since the inauguration of the Trump administration.

He said, “This conference has been arranged as Minister Mattis is visiting Korea for his first overseas trip after his inauguration. It reflects the importance of the Korean Peninsula and Asia-Pacific regions, the strength of the Korea-U.S. alliance and the firm will of the new U.S. administration to fulfill its pledge to defend Korea.”

Pentagon spokesman Navy Captain Jeff Davis also announced, at a regular briefing held on January 25 (local time), that Defense Minister Mattis will have a meeting with Korean Defense Minister Han in Korea on February 2, and will meet with Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada on February 3.

The spokesman Davis added, “it will be emphasized the continuous alliance and responsibility between Korea and Japan to intensify our security cooperation”.
