The Ninetieth battalion, Yeonpyeong unit of the Marine Division, said that on February 22, they carried out a wintertime battalion tactical full-armed march around the craggy coastline and mountainous areas in Yeonpyeong-do, surviving in the sub-freezing cold.

The aim of the training was to strengthen the guarding of the ceasefire line along the front-line seaside, improve the unit's adaptability to the island's operating environment, and enhance the physical fighting strength of soldiers. Around 150 soldiers, including the battalion commander, participated in the training in full gear.

They marched along the approximately 10 kilometer-long coastline and mountainous areas, going through the main front-line operating bases such as white heron habitat and unit’s OP, etc., and cultivated comradeship and the power of unity. They also ran parallel with inspection of communication dead zones and mastery of tactical behavior process to maximize the mission capability.

Meanwhile, the unit checked their training readiness condition for the march and prepared safety measures for thorough advance preparations. Corporal Shin Hyun-tae, who participated in the march, said “It was sub-freezing weather but I didn’t even feel the cold when I was taking part in the training with my fellow soldiers. And I especially felt that I need to improve my combat physical strength, going up and down the mountainous areas.”
