The Navy and Marine Corps join 9 countries in the ‘Combined-Joint Exercise Cobra Gold’ in a jungle in Thailand


Our Navy and Marine Corps participate in the ‘2017 Combined-Joint Exercise Cobra Gold,’ a combined humanitarian training initiative that is held in Thailand from February 14 to 24.


The Combined-Joint Exercise Cobra Gold is a humanitarian and peaceful training exercise intended for multi-national forces given authority and deployed by the UN to master a process from bringing an end to conflicts to stabilizing regions where armed disputes occur, which is co-supervised by the U.S. Pacific Command and Thai Joint Forces Command.


9 countries the U.S., Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, India, Japan, China, and Korea - will participate in the training exercise, and 10 countries including the UK, France, Canada, etc., will observe.


A total of 57 Navy and Marine Corps soldiers will participate, including Brigadier General Kim Jong-sam, commander of the 5th Navy Component Flotilla, who will develop the STAFF EX (Staff Exercise), FTX (Field Training Exercise), and HCA (Humanitarian Civic Action).


The STAFF EX will be held in U-Tapao, Thailand; it will make progress toward mastering general operational procedures to end conflicts, such as deploying multi-national forces, disarming countries in conflict, performing stabilization operations, etc.. Regarding the Field Training Exercise being held in the Ban Chan Khrem area, 20 Korean marine corps soldiers have organized a reconnaissance platoon, and they have developed combined counter-terrorism and counterinsurgency training between multi-national forces.


Humanitarian civil activities will be held in Bangkok, Khorat, and Rayong.


Medical personnel from participating countries, including from the Korean Navy, will hold a medical symposium and simulation training to improve their ability to relieve a large scale of victims. As well, the 59th Naval Mobile Construction Task Group and the Marine Corps Engineering soldiers will build schools and introduce Korean classes, etc..


The 59th Construction Task Group participated in overseas training for the first time since its establishment on February 1, and it will enhance their capacity to react to overseas disaster situations of the Navy and Marine Corps maneuver unit, which will transport supplies using various aircraft and engineering activities.


Colonel Kim Young-shin, commander of the training initiative, said, “We’ll strive to complete missions to showcase the excellence of the Korean Navy and Marine Corps to the world, while enhancing the Korean army’s position in making a contribution to world peace.”
