On March 16, at the Defense Ministry building in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup held a meeting with Commissioner Kim Yong-won, who oversees military human rights at the National Human Rights Commission. The two officials discussed various unresolved issues pertaining to military human rights.

A new system for safeguarding the human rights and welfare of soldiers was established on July 1, 2022, which included the appointment of a military human rights protection officer. On February 6, Kim Yong-won was appointed as both a standing member of the National Human Rights Commission and the commissioner for military human rights protection. During his appointment, Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup congratulated Kim on his appointment and praised his extensive legal experience and his work advocating for the socially disadvantaged.

 

During their meeting, Minister Lee and Commissioner Kim discussed a range of topics related to protecting the human rights of military personnel. Specifically, they agreed that prompt and transparent treatment of victims in cases of human rights violations is crucial, and emphasized the need for systematic development of human rights education to prevent such incidents.

 

Furthermore, Minister Lee and Commissioner Kim pledged to work together to actively promote the military human rights protection system, with the goal of ensuring that soldiers have easy access to the system and receive effective relief in cases of human rights violations.
