Defense Minister meets with Mark Milley, Chairman of US Joint Chiefs of Staff

- Discussed ways to strengthen cooperation for policy against North Korea and extended deterrence

On the afternoon of Saturday, July 15, Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup met with Mark A. Milley, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, during his visit to the Defense Ministry. They assessed the security situation on the Korean Peninsula and the region, and discussed major pressing issues of the alliance.

Celebrating the 70th anniversary of the ROK-US Alliance, Minister Lee extended his appreciation for Milley's significant contribution to the alliance through expanding theater-level combined exercises and field maneuver training, all while evolving toward a ‘global comprehensive strategic alliance’ and a ‘future-oriented practical alliance.’

Furthermore, Minister Lee highlighted the importance of reinforcing a combined defense posture by building extended deterrence and strengthening combined exercises to effectively counter and respond to the North’s advanced nuclear and missile threats.

He mentioned the port call of an Ohio-class nuclear-powered cruise guided missile submarine (SSGN) and combined aerial exercise with the deployment of B-52H strategic bombers last month. He also noted that Korea and the United States have faithfully improved the regular visibility of US strategic assets contained in the Washington Declaration.

Concurring with the remarks of Lee, Milley said that the ROK-US Alliance is the historically most capable alliance between the two countries for the past 70 years. He also stated the current collaboration between South Korean and US military authorities is stronger than ever, and based on this, it is important to display strong capabilities, posture and commitment of the alliance against the North’s threats.

Minister Lee expressed gratitude for Milley's efforts for the alliance especially as he approaches the end of his four-year term as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in September. Le also requested Milley's continued support and endorsement for a robust ROK-US Alliance.

After the meeting, Milley, accompanied by Kim Seung-kyum, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, visited the War Memorial of Korea. They paid tribute at the monument for fallen soldiers of the Korean War to honor their sacrifice.
