Defense Data AI Proliferation Week was held, with achievements on display and education

Human resources and infrastructure, such as the 5G network, will be expanded

Park Seong-je, head of the Joint Experiment Division of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, at an exhibition of major achievements in data and AI held on the first floor of the Defense Ministry in Yongsan-gu, Seoul on the occasion of Defense Data AI Proliferation Week.

Achievements based on the practical application of data and AI technology in various defense sectors, such as an autonomous tunnel exploration robots and an AI convergence coastal security operation system, will be on display. Discussions will be made on key implementation tasks for the diffusion of AI in the defense sector, and a Generative Defense AI service will be launched.

The Defense Ministry announced that it will be holding Defense Data AI Proliferation Week, with various events to promote the dissemination and use of AI technology, from July 3 to 10.

Defense Data AI Proliferation Week was prepared to build an internal and external consensus on the proliferation of AI in the defense sector.

The exhibition will begin at the Defense Ministry and move to Gyeryongdae next week. Exhibitions by each branch of the military and Corps and customized AI training will be held in the second half.

A briefing on defense data and AI policy hosted by Defense Minister Shin Won Sik was held on the same day.

The briefing, which was attended by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and key officers of the Defense Ministry and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, reviewed major progress made in the field of defense data and AI and discussed key implementation tasks for AI diffusion.

In particular, it was decided to identify ways to effectively manage and share data and AI models as strategic assets, and to establish a legal basis for project management systems optimized for AI software.

In addition, as the need for cyber security has gradually increased in an environment where physical boundaries no longer exist, the participants agreed on the need for a zero-trust security policy where all connections are constantly verified.

It was also decided to train AI personnel and build infrastructure by holding an AI competition for military academy students, securing frequencies to operate manned and unmanned collaborative systems, and building a defense 5G network for a super-fast, super-connected, low-latency network.

In this connection, the Defense Ministry has launched Generative Defense AI services for the staff of the Defense Ministry as of now.

Generative Defense AI will enable the Defense Ministry staff to carry out translations of military terminology, questions and answers on internal military regulations and document summaries on an internal defense network on a pilot basis. The scope of users of the service will gradually increase as the infrastructure, such as AI servers, is expanded.

Meanwhile, the Defense Ministry will educate its personnel on cautions in using AI, such as the reliability and bias in answers generated by generative AI, with training on Generative Defense AI during Data and AI Proliferation Week. On July 4, there will be a lecture on the understanding and use of generative AI for its personnel.

Defense Minister Shin Won Sik stressed that “It is essential that all members of each branch of the military are aware of the need for AI and cultivate the ability to use AI to build a strong military based on science and technology,” and urged related officials to find ways to cultivate the ability of soldiers in various units to experience and use defense AI.
