“We must convince the North that its provocations have no chance and that if it ever provoked us, it would lose more than it would gain from our strong response. A response based on strength is a deterrent, and deterrence leads to peace.”

Defense Minister Shin Won Sik made the remarks in a special lecture on “Security on the Korean Peninsula and Our Military's Readiness” at the News1 Future Forum 2024 in the International Conference Room of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Sejong-daero, Jung-gu, Seoul on May 8.

Minister Shin emphasized that “North Korea has committed provocations when it believed they are necessary and the odds are in its favor, so only ‘strength’ that can stop its provocations.”

He said, “Our military has realized peace through strength based on an overwhelming defense posture, the ROK-U.S. Alliance and solidarity with friendly nations.”

Minister Shin explained that the Defense Ministry will strengthen the military’s independent deterrence and response capabilities against the North’s nuclear and missiles threats with the development of the ROK 3K Defense System and will strive to build a strong science and technology-based military by actively implementing Defense Innovation 4.0.

He added that the military is proactively adapting to changing international security environment through various efforts such as strengthening ROK/U.S. integrated extended deterrence through the Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG), as well as trilateral security between Korea, the United States and Japan, and defense industry cooperation and export expansion.

He concluded by saying, “I hope this forum will be a meaningful occasion that makes an accurate assessment of the rapidly changing security environment and presents a vision for the future of the Republic of Korea.”
