Defense and Foreign Affairs ministers jointly hold 4th meeting of preparatory committee to prepare for a successful 2021 Seoul UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Conference

- Officials from ten ministries and agencies discussed ways to cooperate during the meeting, jointly presided over by defense and foreign ministers -

Jointly presided over by Minister of National Defense (MND) Suh Wook and Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung Ui-yong, the fourth meeting of the ｢preparatory committee｣ was held at the main building of MND at 16:00, on Wednesday, September 29, in order to prepare for the successful hosting of the  「2021 Seoul UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Conference*」, slated to take place at Hotel Grand Hyatt and Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul on December 7 to 8.

The participants discussed how to hold the conference amid quarantine measures in the COVID-19 situation, after the pan-government preparatory office’s briefing on the progress of preparation for the ministerial conference and the event schedule. They also shared the details of the planned events, including various exhibitions, as well as the commitments to contribution to the UN peacekeeping operations (PKO) that the government has looked at.  

  ◦ The ministerial conference will involve a UN women’s PKO seminar, a tour of the JSA for top delegates, and an exhibition of the peace-building process on the Korean Peninsula. On the sidelines of the conference, some exhibitions that will show the history and direction of the UN PKO by using advanced IT will be held at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP). The exhibitions will include a smart camp exhibition that will present the UN mission’s future vision, and our exhibition of high-tech PKO weapons that can be used at the site of the UN mission.

“We should enhance our contribution to the international community’s dispute prevention and peace building, as well as the establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula, based on strong security capabilities,” Suh stressed.
