Ministry of National Defense holds 「meeting of main officers for future defense innovation」 to take a leap toward becoming an ‘army of cutting-edge science and technology’

Presided over by Minister of National Defense Suh Wook, a ｢meeting of main officers for future defense innovation｣ was held via videoconference at 10 A.M. on Wednesday, July 28. 

The meeting was held to form a consensus on the ministry’s  ｢future defense innovation initiative｣ and ｢Defense Vision 2050｣ to take a leap toward a future army based on the cutting-edge science and technology, and to give a focus to the defense officers' interest in defense innovation.

The meeting consisted of two parts. In the first part, there was an introduction of the ‘future defense innovation initiative’ and ‘Defense Vision 2050,’ and in the second, there was a presentation on the ‘future combined operation concept’ and a concentrated discussion on the ‘military’s role in developing future science and technology.’

 “In the current international security environment, the development of cutting-edge science and technology based on the fourth industrial revolution has been having effects in all areas of life, including politics, economy, society, and culture. Significantly, there is a demand for an innovative change in the area of defense,” Seo said, stressing that our military should promptly apply cutting-edge science and technology, such as AIs and unmanned systems, to the military and concentrate on the development of defense policies and strategies to prepare for the future, as neighboring countries are also concentrating their national capabilities on the development of science and technology to prepare for the future.

The participants, which included military commanders and chiefs of relevant units and organizations, shared the view that our military should recognize the trend of a push for military innovation in neighboring countries to respond to the rapidly changing future security environment, promptly apply cutting-edge science and technology such as AIs and unmanned combat systems to the military, and strive to push for the ｢future defense innovation initiative｣ to concentrate on the development of defense policies and strategies.
