Minister of National Defense Suh Wook shared his opinions on the international security environment with ministers from different countries, and called for the support of the international community to make progress in the peace process on the Korean Peninsula at the eighth ASEAN Defense Ministers Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus) held through a video link on June 16.

During his speech in a plenary session, Minister Suh stressed that the COVID-19 pandemic has intensified the uncertainty of the security situation in the region, such as fierce strategic competition among countries and the spread of non-traditional security threats.

Suh also called for the support and cooperation of the international community to establish the denuclearization of and a permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula, citing that the leaders of the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the United States (US) had reaffirmed their unshakable bond to make progress in the peace process on the Korean Peninsula at the ROK-US Summit held in May.

The participating defense ministers agreed to work together for peace and stability in the region through activities of the seven subcommittees affiliated to the ADMM-Plus, and agreed on the importance of a spirit of ‘solidarity and cooperation’ to overcome common security threats, including COVID-19.
