The Ambassador was urged to continue preparing reports on North Korea's violations of UN sanctions.

Defense Minister Shin Won Sik met with US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield on April 15 to discuss cooperation on North Korea policy.

On April 15, Defense Minister Shin Won Sik met with U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield at the Defense Ministry to discuss cooperation on North Korea policy and address outstanding security issues.

Minister Shin acknowledged Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield’s crucial role in addressing North Korea’s violations of UN sanctions and its human rights issues.

He also noted that Korea has commenced a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) this year and expressed his anticipation of collaborating with the United States across various sectors.

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield emphasized that North Korea's nuclear and missile development not only violates UNSC resolutions but also constitutes an illegal act undermining international community values. She explained that the extension of the term for the Panel of Experts under the UN Security Council Sanctions Committee on North Korea was blocked due to Russia's veto, a move that raises concerns about providing North Korea an opportunity to further its nuclear and missile programs.

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield stated that the United States is developing alternative methods to ensure continued reliable monitoring of UN sanctions violations by the DPRK and requested enhanced cooperation from allies, including South Korea.

Both parties acknowledged the increasing instability in international security and concurred on the critical role of the ROK-U.S. alliance in sustaining global peace and stability, particularly in the Korean Peninsula and surrounding region. They particularly stressed the need to further strengthen the alliance given the growing strategic importance of the Korean Peninsula.

Minister Shin described South Korea's commitment to enforcing UN Security Council resolutions and supporting international peacekeeping operations. He affirmed the country's intent to enhance cooperation with both the United Nations and the United States.

In response, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield expressed appreciation for South Korea's contributions and showed interest in exploring joint projects beneficial to both nations.
