On November 1, Minister of National Defense Suh Wook met with Australia’s visiting Army Chief of Staff Rick Burr, and the two discussed the security situation in the region and ways to improve bilateral cooperation in the areas of national defense and defense industries.

Expressing his appreciation for the successful holding of the fifth ROK-Australia foreign and defense ministerial talks and the ROK-Australia defense ministers meeting held on September 13, Suh stressed the need to “deepen cooperation between the defense ministries and armed services of the two countries, in order to faithfully implement the agreements made at the two meetings.”

Noting that the two countries plan to reach an agreement, as a Korean company has been chosen as a sole counterparty in the Australia’s self-propelled artillery project, Suh said “I expect the Armies of our two countries to improve their interoperability by strengthening bilateral cooperation in the area of self-propelled artillery, with the bilateral cooperation in defense industry as momentum.”

Burr explained Australia’s willingness to contribute to achieving stability in the region, sharing the assessment of the recent security situation in the Indo-Pacific region. After the meeting with Suh, Burr visited the Kyeryongdae military headquarters for talks with ROK Army Chief of Staff Nam Yeong-shin.
