Two sides sign ‘MOU on defense cooperation’

Discuss widespread cooperation, including cyber and climate change

Nad pledges to provide support for North Korea’s denuclearization

Minister of National Defense Lee Jong-sup and his Slovakian counterpart Jaroslav Nad have agreed to expand defense cooperation between the two countries, in both traditional and non-traditional areas.

With defense cooperation the main item on the agenda, the two ministers signed a ‘memorandum of understanding (MOU) on defense cooperation’ at the ROK-Slovakia defense ministerial talks held in the afternoon of September 21, the ministry said in a statement.

In tandem with this, the two sides agreed to expand defense cooperation not only in traditional areas, including military education and humanitarian support, but also in non-traditional areas, including cyber and climate change. The ministry explained that the signing of this MOU has laid significant groundwork for defense cooperation between the two countries. With this MOU as momentum, the two sides also agreed to swiftly conclude a ‘memorandum of understanding on cooperation in military logistics and the arms industry’ for long-term and mutually reciprocal cooperation in the area of the arms industry.

Lee called for Slovakia’s continued support, expressing his gratitude for the Slovakian government’s support for our government’s efforts to denuclearize North Korea and build peace on the Korean Peninsula.

In response, Nad said that Slovakia stands firmly against North Korea’s nuclear development and will continue to provide its best possible support for North Korea’s substantive denuclearization.

The two ministers also exchanged opinions with respect to the measures which can help the ROK and Slovakia contribute to restoring the sovereignty and territory of Ukraine, agreeing that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is an obvious violation of international law, the ministry said in a statement.
