Republic of Korea, Sweden exchange views on nation

On the afternoon of December 20, Minister of National Defense Jeong Kyeong-doo met with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven at Lotte Hotel in central Seoul to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea and Sweden.

During their meeting, Minister Jeong and Prime Minister Lofven had a wide-ranging discussion on the security situation in the region, and addressed the importance of bilateral cooperation in national defense and the defense industry.

After reflecting on the fact that Sweden provided a field hospital during the Korean War, and its contribution to maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula as a member of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission (NNSC) after the armistice, Jeong thanked Sweden for helping with the resumption of denuclearization talks between Washington and Pyeongyang in Stockholm.

“We are pleased that our two countries have been actively interacting with each other in various sectors since the establishment of amicable relations during the Korean War. Sweden will continue to support a peaceful resolution of issues on the Korean Peninsula,” Lofven replied.

Acknowledging their enhanced cooperation in terms of national defense and the defense industry, which has included the conclusion of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on cooperation in the defense industry and munitions fields, and holding working-level talks of national defense policies, Jeong and Lofven vowed to further boost their cooperation for continued development.
